Karyotype
A photomicrograph of an individual's chromosomes arranged in a standard
format showing the number, size, and shape of each chromosome type. It is
used in low-resolution physical mapping to correlate gross chromosomal
abnormalities with the characteristics of specific diseases.
Keratins
Insoluble protective or structural proteins consisting of parallel
polypeptide chains in a-helical or b-conformation.
Ketose
A simple monosaccharide having its carbonyl groups at other than a terminal
position. Kilobase (kb) Unit of length for DNA fragments equal to 1000
nucleotides (kilo base pairs of DNA).
Kinase
An enzyme catalyzing phosphorylation of an acceptor molecule by adenosine
triphosphate (ATP).
