Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs or NAIDs) are medicines that are used to treat inflammation, mild to
moderate pain, and fever. They are basically drugs with analgesic and
antipyretic effects and with higher doses, they have anti-inflammatory
effects. Nonsteroidal implies that these drugs are non steroids drugs or
non-narcotic drugs. NSAIDs are effective at pain relief (analgesia), and
reducing swelling (anti-inflammatory).

The common ones like aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, are available
over the counter in many areas. Others are available only with a
prescription from a physician or dentist.
NSAIDs can be obtained over-the-counter, but
that does not mean they do not have any side-effects. NSAIDs are associated
with several side effects like vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, constipation,
decreased appetite, rash, dizziness etc. The most serious side effects are
kidney failure, liver failure, ulcers and prolonged bleeding after an injury
or surgery. There are some who are allergic to NSAIDs and may develop
shortness of breath when an NSAID is taken. People with asthma are at a
higher risk for experiencing allergic reaction to NSAIDs.NSAIDs should be
used under physician supervision if the patient has asthma, liver, heart and
kidney problems
