Losartan Potassium is an angiotensin II receptor (type AT1)antagonist. It is a well known prescription drug, an oral medication that is recommended to treat high blood pressure or hypertension and also preventing progression of kidney diseases in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes. This is the first angiotensin II receptor antagonist to be marketed by Abbott under the trade name LOT. This is available in generic form. It may be used alone or in combination with other drugs.

Uses of Losartan

• Losartan is used in the treatment of hypertension.
• The nedicine can also be used in treating left ventricular hypertrophy (increase in muscle) and diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease).

How does Cozaar Losartan Works?

Losartan and its principle active metabolite block the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone secreting effects of angiostein II. This is done by selectively blocking the binding of angiostein II to AT1. The drug acts by preventing the action of a hormone called angiotensin II in the human body. Angiotensin II generally acts on special receptors in the body, with two major results. One, it narrows the peripheral blood vessels , and two, it stimulates the production of hormone aldosterone, another hormone in the body. Aldosterone hormone, causes salt and water to be retained by the kidneys, which increase the volume of fluid in the blood vessels. Losartan blocks the receptors that angiotensin II acts on, and so prevents its actions.

Losartan Dosage

25-100 mg once or twice daily: starting and maintenance dose: 50 mg once a day. In volume depleted patients: 25 mg once daily. As Losartan comes as a tablet, it is taken by mouth and can be taken once or twice a day with or without food.

Contra- Indications

Do NOT use Losartan if:

• you are allergic to any ingredient in Losartan
• you are in your second or third trimester of pregnancy
• the patient is a child with severe kidney problems

The drug has certain side effects, that can affect individuals in different ways. The following are some of the side effects, that are often associated with the drug:

• Diarrhoea
• Heartburm
• Muscle cramps or weakness
• Dizziness
• Headache

Some side effects may be serious which require immediate medical attention like swelling of the face, throat, lips, eyes, tongue, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs, hoarseness, difficulty in breathing or swallowing and chest pain.
