DOXYCYCLINE


Doxycycline is a popular antibiotic belonging to the class known as 'Tetracyclines'. The drug is used for treating various bacterial infections in different parts of human body. It effectively treats respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, skin infections, urinary and genital infections.

The drug is well absorbed from the gut, even after food and is excreted in the bile, in the faeces, which it re- enters by diffusing across the small intestinal wall, and , to some extent in the urine. The drug works by inhibiting the growth and spread of bacteria in the body.

Iupac Name: (2-(amino-hydroxy-methylidene)-4-dimethylamino -5,10,11,12a-tetrahydroxy-6-methyl- 4a,5,5a,6-tetrahydro-4H-tetracene-1,3,12-trione

Dosage
1st day 100 mg, 12 hourly followed by 100 mg daily.

Contra- Indications: Hypersensitivity

  • Tooth discoloration
  • Enamel Hypoplasia
  • Reduced fibula growth rate
