Description

Dextromethorphan is an antitussive drug. It is found in cold and cough medicines. It is also used in other medicines used for pain relief to psychological applications. A cough suppressant, the medicine affects the signals in the brain that trigger cough reflex. Pure dextromethorphan is available in powder form made up of white crystals, as syrups, tablets, or lozenges manufactured under several different brand names and generic labels.


Uses

The basic use of the medicine is to relieve a nonproductive cough caused by a cold, the flu, or other conditions. However, it will not treat a cough that is caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema.


How to use ?

Use exactly as directed on the label, or prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger amounts or for a longer time than recommended. Such medicine should be taken only for a short period of time until your symptoms clear up. Use a special dose-measuring spoon or cup for the syrup so that you get the exact dose. Do not use a regular table spoon because it can lead to wrong measurements. If you are taking in lozenge form , allow it to dissolve in your mouth. If you miss a dose, take it immediately as soon as you remember it . However, if it is already time for the next dose, then skip the present dose.
