Description
FRAGMIN is a type of medicine called low molecular weight heparin.
It works by making thrombin inactive in the body. Thrombin is an
ingredient which contributes to blood clotting. Blood clots are most
likely to form in the first few days after surgery when you are not
able to walk and it is during this time that dalteparin is used.
Generic dalteparin injections are not yet available.
Uses
- This is used to prevent formation of clots in the veins,
arteries, lungs, or heart during abdominal surgery.
- This medication is a "blood thinner"
(anticoagulant). It is used to help prevent blood clots in
persons undergoing surgery
- Used to treat unstable coronary artery disease
- Used to prevent clotting in those at risk when mobility is
restricted during acute illness
- Used to prevent clotting in blood dialysis and filtration
equipment in connection with acute kidney failure or kidney
disease
How to use \ dosage ?
Inject under the skin (subcutaneously), usually 1 to 2 hours before
surgery, then once a day for 5 to 10 days after the surgery. Do not
inject into a muscle (intramuscularly). It is usually given by a
health-care professional, or you or a family member may be trained
on how to give the injections. Do not exceed the prescribed dose,
and try not to miss doses. To avoid bruising, do not rub the site
where dalteparin has been injected. Special care is needed.
Safety tips
Tell your doctor if you have any of these conditions :
- Hemorrhage
- Bleeding disorder
- Recent injury, surgery, or delivery of baby
- Kidney or liver disease
- High blood pressure
- Ulcer in the stomach or intestine, diverticulitis, or other
bowel disease
- Pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- Undergoing treatments for cancer
You will be monitored closely while you are on this
medication. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

- Bleeding from the injection site
- Fever
- Dizziness or fainting spells
- Difficulty breathing
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Upset stomach
- Pain or irritation at the injection site
- Skin rash, itching
- Bloody or black, tarry stools
- Blood in urine
