Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used for treating certain bacterial
infections. It belongs to the class of antibiotics known as
fluoroquinolones. It is available in both tablet and suspension(liquid )
form for treating various diseases.

- Ciprofloxacin is used to treat or prevent certain infections caused
by bacteria.
- It is used to treat bronchitis, sinus.
- Ciproflaxin is used to diarrhoea caused by E. coli, Campylobacter
jejuni, and Shigella bacteria.
- It is also used to treat urinary tract infections and kidney
infections caused by bacteria such as E. coli.
- Ciprofloxacin drug is also used to treat infections of the skin,
airways, lungs, bones, and joints caused by susceptible bacteria.
- Cipro may also be used to prevent or slow anthrax after exposure.
- This medicine is also helpful in treating and preventing dangerous
illnesses that are deliberately spread like as plague, tularemia, and
anthrax of the skin or mouth.
How does Ciproflaxine Works?
The drug acts by inhibiting
multiplication of bacteria by stopping the reproduction and repair of their
genetic material or (DNA). Ciproflaxine drug is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic
which kills sensitive bacteria. The drug works by stopping the production of
essential proteins required by the bacteria to survive.
Dosage of Ciproflaxine
The dosage is determined on the basis of the
severity of infection, type of infecting organism and age, weight and renal
function of the patient. The ciproflaxine tablet and suspension are usually
taken twice a day, with or without food, preferably in the morning and
evening. Do not stop taking ciprofloxacin unless and until you experience
the severe side effects.
Side Effects of Ciproflaxine
The drug has certain side effects,
that can affect individuals in different ways. The following are some of the
side effects, that are often associated with the drug:
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting Abdominal pain
- Restlessness
It is contra indicated in pregnancy and the drug passes into breast
milk and may affect the infant adversely.
