Cefuroxime is an antibiotic
resistant to most betalactamases and is active against a wide range
of Gram-positive and Gram -negative organisms. The most important
use of the drug is in treating meningitis caused by H. influenzae,
meningcocci an pneumococcoi. This is so, because it attains high
concentrations in C.S.F.

Chemical Description: 4-(carbamoyloxymethyl)-8-
[2-(2-furyl)-2-methoxyimino-acetyl]amino -7-oxo-
2-thia-6-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct -4-ene-5-carboxylic acid
Dosage
Adults: 750 mg thrice daily i.m or i.v. Severe infections:
1.5 gm daily i.v. Total dose 3-6 gram daily
Children and infants: 30-100 mg/kg body weight daily in 3-4
divided doses.
Neonates: 100mg/kg body weight i.v. daily
This cephalosporin antibiotic can be administered orally and
parenterally for treating respiratory, skin, and other infections.
Contra Indications: Patients with known hypersensitivity to
cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
The drug has certain side effects, that can affect individuals in

- Eosinophilia
- Transient increase of hepatic enzymes
