ATENOLOL


Atenolol is a popular drug belonging to the class of beta blockers, mainly used for treating different cardiovascular diseases. The drug was developed as a replacement for propanolol, used for treating hypertension.

It is a relatively cardio selective beta-andrenoceptor blocking agent without membrane stabilizing or intrinsic sympathomimetic activities.

The various cardio vascular diseases treated with the help of atenolol are hypertension, angina pain, coronary heart disease, arrhythmias. Patients with compensated congestive heart failure can also be treated with the drug.

Brand Name: Tenormin

Iupac Name: 2-[4-[2-hydroxy-3-(1-methylethylamino)propoxy]phenyl]ethanamide

Dosage
Adults: 50-100 mg daily
Children:1-1.3 mg/kg/day daily or in two divided doses.

Contra- Indications: Heart block greater than first degree, hypersensitivity to atenolol.

Side Effects
The drug has certain side effects, that can affect individuals in different ways. The following are some of the side effects, that are often associated with the drug:

  • Fatigue
  • Skin rashes
There is no risk factor for pregnant women and poses no problem for elderly people.
