Anti-Itch drugs are used to get relief from itching and taken by mouth or by injection. They are available only with a physician's prescription. Thse anti-itch medicines are also known as antipruritic drugs or antipruritics or anti-itch drug hydroxyzine and come in tablets and injectable forms.


Causes of Itching

An itching or allergic reaction occurs when the body is unusually sensitive to some substances lika as follows:

  • Sunburns
  • Allergic reactions to certain drugs
  • Fungal infections
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Chickenpox
  • Insect bites and stings
  • Allergic reactions to plants like poison ivy etc.

How does anti-itching drugs work?

Usually anti-itching drugs are anti histamines. Whenever an anti itching drug is taken, the body reacts to it and prevents or stops the releasing of histamine which cause itching and other symptoms. These drugs reduce the symptoms by blocking the effects of histamine.

Ingredients in Anti Itch Drugs

The topical anti itching drugs in the form of craem or lotion is available without a doctor's prescription. But the common ingredients in anti-itching are as follows:

  • Antihistamines: For example, Benadryl.
  • Corticosteroid: For example, hydrocortisone topical cream.
  • Local anesthetics: For example, benzocaine topical cream.
  • Counterirritants: For example, menthol, mint oil, or camphor.

Warning

Anti itch drugs should not be taken for more than 4 months. Anti-itch drug hydroxyzine is also added in alcohol and other drugs like cold medicine, sleep aids, allergy medicine, medicine for anti-convulsant, tranquilizers, some pain relievers. Alcohol should not be taken while taking anti itch drugs and also chcek with his or her doctor before taking any other medicines. Some people feel drowsy after taking the medicine.
