belonging to the class of drugs called penicillins. It is one of the most
widely prescribed antibiotics and fights bacteria in human body. The drug is
used to treat many types of infections, including tonsillitis, pneumonia,
bronchitis, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, and infections of the
intestines or food poisoning.

Working
Ampicillin belongs to the group of beta-lactam antibiotics, and is able to
penetrate Gram-positive bacteria. The drug inhibits the third and final
stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis, which ultimately leads to cell
lysis.
Ampicillin is available in tablet, capsules and liquid forms. The amount of
drug should be taken as per the doctor's prescription. The drug should be
taken at evenly spaced intervals. The capsules/ tablets/liquid are available
in varying potencies of 250mg and 500 mg depending on the severity of the
individual case.
Dosage
Adults: 250-500mg 8 hourly or as required
Children:125-250 mg 6 hourly or according to age
Infants: 50- 150 mg/kg body weight in 2-4 divided doses
Contra- Indications: Hypersensitivity to penicillin

Simultaneous use of the drug with oral contraceptives may lead to break
