Description
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic belonging to the penicillin group of drugs,
which fights bacteria in your body. Amoxicillin is used to reduce the
development of drug-resistant bacteria and hence should be used only to
treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be
caused by bacteria.
Uses
- Treat infections of the ear, nose, and throat.
- Treat Infections of the genitourinary tract.
- Infections of the skin and skin structure
- Infections of the lower respiratory tract
- Gonorrhea, acute uncomplicated (ano-genital and urethral infections)
- Cure bladder infections
- Used to treat pneumonia
- Stomach ulcers
- It can be used with another antibiotic called clarithromycin (Biaxin)
to treat helicobacter pylori infection.
- It is also used sometimes to prevent anthrax infection.
How to use
Take this medication exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take the
medication more than that recommended by your doctor. If you are taking
amoxicillin with clarithromycin to treat stomach ulcer, use all of your
medications as directed. You may take the medicine with or without food.
Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well so that the medication is mixed
properly. Measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup,
not with a regular table spoon. You may place the liquid directly on the
tongue, or you may mix it with water, milk, fruit juice, or ginger ale. The
chewable tablet should be chewed before you swallow it. The dispersible
tablet should be put in atleast 2 teaspoons of water to dissolve it. After
the tablet has completely broken apart, drink all of it right away after its
been mixed completely in water.
Safety tips
- Do not use this medication if you are allergic to amoxicillin or to
any other penicillin antibiotic, such as ampicillin, carbenicillin,
dicloxacillin, oxacillin or penicillin.
- Before using amoxicillin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any
drugs .
- You should let your doctor know if you have asthma, kidney disease,
liver disease, blood clotting disorder, mononucleosis , a history of
diarrhea caused by taking antibiotics or any type of allergy.

- Sore throat, fever, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling,
and red skin rash

- Clay-colored stools
- Jaundice
- Body aches
- Diarrhea
- Chills
- Flu symptoms
- Easy bruising or bleeding
- Urinating less than usual or not at all
- Unusual weakness
- Unusual thoughts or behavior; or
- Black-out or convulsions
