Cipla Becomes the Top Pharmaceutical Company of 2009

February 9, 2010- Cipla has occupied first position among the top 10 pharmaceutical companies of India for the year ending December, 2009. Cipla registered a market share of 5.38%- a rise of 18% over the previous year. It has overtaken Ranbaxy Laboratories and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to become the top pharmaceutical company of the domestic pharma market. The domestic drug market has been valued at Rs 40,051.74 crore, an increase of 17% over the previous year. All the data has been provided by ORG-IMS- the drug sales tracking agency that tracks drug sales among more than 500,000 traders in the country through stockist data. Other top pharmaceutical companies of India who occupied positions 4-10 in ORG-IMS rankings are Piramal Healthcare, Zydus Cadila, Sun Pharma, Alkem Laboratories, Mankind, Lupin and Aristo Pharma respectively.

Cipla’s domestic market share grew 18% during the year 2009 due to its 924 pharma products as compared to 565 products of Ranbaxy and 177 products of GSK. Ranbaxy registered a market share of 4.91% and GSK had a market share of 4.35%, with a growth of 13.7% and 18% respectively. During the period, Cipla had sales of Rs 2,155.29 crore in the domestic market, that is higher than Ranbaxy’s Rs 1,968.24 crore and GSK’s Rs 1,743.15 crore pharma sales.
