Serratiopeptidase (Serratia E-15 protease, also known as serralysin, serratiapeptase, serratia peptidase, serratio peptidase, or serrapeptidase) is a proteolytic enzyme (protease) produced by enterobacterium Serratia sp. E-15. Serratiopeptidase is present in the silkworm intestine and allows the emerging moth to dissolve its cocoon. Serratiopeptase is produced by purification from culture of Serratia E-15 bacteria.

Uses of Serratiopeptidase

It has been found to be an excellent alternative to salicylates (aspirin), ibuprofen, and the more potent NSAIDs. Unlike these medications, SerraEzyme is a naturally occurring enzyme and that does not irritate the digestive system.

This super protein digesting enzyme breaks down "non living" matter in the human body, including cysts, arterial plaque, blood clots and scar tissue. It can reduce the levels of dead tissue in the circulatory system, promoting smoother healthier flowing blood. Serratiopeptidase fights fibrin build up in the cardiovascular system, organs and muscle tissue. In addition, histological studies also show it to be a powerful anti-inflammatory. It also is an anti-edemic, preventing swelling and fluid retention.

Research Evidence

Serratiopeptidase has been researched clinically and used as an alternative medicine over twenty-five years in Europe, Japan and Asia.

The recent research on serratiopepidase offers evidence that it is effective in treating pain and inflammation. Serratiopeptidase has been studied in several conditions including chronic airway lung disease, chronic ear nose throat disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome, jaw pain, osteoarthritis and edema. Although these early studies show clinical potential, the full effectiveness and side effects require more research.

Serratiopeptidase Side Effect

The current research documents a rare side effect of pneumonitis (as noted in "A Case of pneumonitis due to serrapeptase" by Nihon Kyobu Shikkan Gakkai Zasshi in 1989). Other side effects may include allergic reaction, in which case discontinue use and consult a doctor, or minor aches and pains, which should subside in a few weeks of taking serratiopeptidase daily.

Possible interactions and dangers of serrapeptase? This enzyme seems to show blood-thinning effects (similar to Aspirin). Taking this supplement while on blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin), clopidogrel (Plavix) or ASA (Aspirin) may increase the chances of bleeding or bruising.

This increased risk of bleeding may also occur when this enzyme is taken with other natural remedies such as garlic, fish oil and turmeric. Talk to your family doctor first before taking this enzyme if you are taking similar medications or herbal supplements.

Dosage to Use

Typical dosage used in clinical studies is 10 mg three times daily.

Conclusion

Most of the clinical studies conducted do not document any side effects. In the few that do document side effects, there is not enough data to determine if they are caused by the serratiopeptidase or if they were just a coincidence. With the positive results of the preliminary data, there is sure to be more studies to document the benefits and side effects.
