10 Dec 2010 Topical antibiotics in the form of
cream or gel or lotion are widely used in the treatment of acne. One of the
most commonly used anti-acne medications is topical antibiotic cream that is
used as a stand-alone acne treatment or in combinations with other
medications in order to totally remove acne and prevent breakouts.
Topical antibiotics
are helpful in treating inflammatory acne. This type of acne is seen as a
reddish and painful bump on the face and which occurs when follicles become
obstructed and there is the overgrowth of a normal skin bacteria, refereed
as Propionibacterium acnes. This is the type of acne that can cause scars if
left untreated. Topical antibiotics are applied and they work by killing the
Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. This prevents the growth of small
infections in the pores and indirectly keep the pores open. The topical
antibiotics for acne treatment are sold as lotions, gels, pads, and
toner-like solutions. Topical acne cream do not have any dangers associated
with oral antibiotics used for acne treatment. It is easy to use and easily
absorbed by the skin. Moreover you need to apply just a thin layer at least
twice a day and harsh cleansers or other acne creams should be avoided.
The most commonly prescribed medications are described below:
Clindamycin
This medication contains phosphate and
Benzoyl peroxide. This
antibiotic cream kill the bacteria which causes the acne. It also helps in
getting rid off the dead skin cells from the surface of the skin's layers.
Watch out for the side effects that occur like skin dryness, irritation and
peeling but they are usually mild and fairly tolerable. But some also
experience excessive oil production, skin swelling, skin itching or burning,
rash, and slight breathing difficulty. This implies that the medication does
not suit and it should be stopped immediately.
Erythromycin
This is another popular antibiotic cream used for acne treatment. This
cream has an unique process in which oxygen is used to kill off the bacteria
causing the acne. It helps clear off blockage from the skin pores and
follicles. The best thing about this cream is that you can use it even while
youâre pregnant as it is seen that many pregnant women
suffer from acne caused about by hormonal imbalances. There certain side
effects to erythromycin like skin itching, redness, increased oil
production, skin dryness or burning. Again, if you have any allergic
reaction to erythromycin, it is necessary to consult with your doctor

medicines are Tetrocycline and Metronidazole. It is necessary these topical
antibiotics must be applied as per doctor's advice and should not be stopped
